About Dry Needling

One part of a broader treatment plan.

Functional dry needling uses thin, sterile needles in selected muscle tissue. It may be considered as part of physiotherapy treatment after an appropriate assessment.

Dry needling is generally combined with education, movement, therapeutic exercise and other physiotherapy strategies rather than being used as a stand-alone solution.

  • Muscular tightness or sensitivity
  • Movement restrictions related to muscle tension
  • Selected musculoskeletal pain presentations
  • Support for an active rehabilitation program
Potential Uses

When dry needling may be considered.

Your physiotherapist will determine whether dry needling is appropriate based on your assessment and health history.

01

Muscle Tension

Dry needling may be considered for selected areas of muscular tightness or sensitivity.

02

Movement Restrictions

Treatment may be used alongside mobility work when muscle tension affects comfortable movement.

03

Musculoskeletal Pain

It may be one treatment option for certain muscle and joint-related concerns.

04

Sports Rehabilitation

Dry needling may support a broader exercise and return-to-activity plan.

05

Overuse Concerns

Selected muscle symptoms associated with repetitive activity may be assessed.

06

Active Rehabilitation

Treatment may be combined with exercise to support mobility, strength and function.

What to Expect

Safety begins with an assessment.

Dry needling is provided only after your physiotherapist has reviewed your symptoms, medical history, treatment preferences and relevant precautions.

The technique, alternatives, possible benefits and potential risks will be explained before you decide whether to proceed.

01

Assessment

Review your symptoms, movement, health history and treatment goals.

02

Explanation and Consent

Discuss the technique, alternatives and potential responses before treatment.

03

Targeted Treatment

Selected areas are treated based on the assessment findings.

04

Movement and Aftercare

Receive appropriate aftercare guidance, mobility work or exercise.

Important Information

Your comfort and safety matter.

Is dry needling right for everyone?

No. Dry needling may not be appropriate for certain health conditions, medications or personal preferences. Your physiotherapist will screen for precautions and discuss alternatives.

What might I feel afterward?

Temporary soreness, bruising or fatigue may occur. Your physiotherapist will explain expected responses and when additional follow-up may be appropriate.

Booking an appointment does not mean dry needling will automatically be performed. The technique is considered only after assessment and informed consent.
