Understanding TMJ Concerns

Supporting comfortable jaw movement

The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull. Together with the surrounding muscles, these joints help you talk, chew, swallow and yawn.

Temporomandibular disorders, often called TMD or TMJ dysfunction, can involve the jaw joints, the muscles controlling the jaw or a combination of both.

Physiotherapy may be one part of a coordinated care plan designed to manage discomfort, restore movement and improve everyday jaw function.

Common Concerns

When TMJ physiotherapy may be considered

An assessment can help determine whether physiotherapy is appropriate for your particular symptoms.

01

Jaw pain or tenderness

Discomfort around the jaw joint, face or muscles used for chewing.

02

Restricted jaw movement

Difficulty opening or closing the mouth comfortably during daily activities.

03

Clicking or popping

Jaw sounds that occur alongside pain, stiffness or movement difficulty.

04

Muscle tension

Tightness around the jaw, face, neck or shoulders that may affect comfort and movement.

05

Headaches

Certain headaches occurring together with jaw tension or other TMJ-related symptoms.

06

Clenching or grinding

Muscle discomfort or fatigue associated with frequent jaw clenching or teeth grinding.

What to Expect

Your assessment and care plan

Your physiotherapist will listen to your concerns, assess relevant movement and develop a plan based on the findings.

01

Discuss your symptoms

We begin by discussing your symptoms, health history, jaw habits and activities that make the problem better or worse.

02

Assess movement and function

Your assessment may include jaw movement, muscle tenderness, neck movement, posture and tasks related to your symptoms.

03

Explain the findings

Your physiotherapist will discuss what was observed and whether physiotherapy is suitable for your concern.

04

Create your treatment plan

If appropriate, you will receive an individualized plan with treatment, education and home-care recommendations.

Treatment Approach

Care selected for your needs

Treatment varies because jaw symptoms can have different contributing factors. Your care may include a combination of education, movement exercises and hands-on treatment.

Treatment choices will be discussed with you and adjusted according to your comfort, response and rehabilitation goals.

✓ Education about jaw movement and symptom management
✓ Gentle jaw mobility and coordination exercises
✓ Exercises for relevant neck and postural concerns
✓ Manual therapy when appropriate and agreed upon
✓ Relaxation and self-management strategies
✓ A personalized home rehabilitation program

Coordinated healthcare

Jaw concerns may require input from a dentist, physician or another qualified healthcare professional. If your assessment suggests that another type of evaluation is needed, your physiotherapist may recommend appropriate follow-up. Dental appliances must be assessed and fitted by a dental professional.

When to seek prompt medical care

If your jaw is locked open or shut, is very difficult to move, your face becomes swollen or your symptoms are worsening, contact a healthcare provider or Health Link at 811. Visit an emergency department when advised or when immediate care is required.
